sweet home

Apple picking in Maine, Cherry Picking in Leona Valley, CA, Fruit Festivals in and around the Santa Clarita Valley and beyond! The other day I was assembling breakfast looking for the sweet compliment to end to my meal. I checked the fruit drawer in the fridge, the cupboard shelves, and in between the kitchen counter and the stove, my selection was made! So there I was… navigating this ripe mango with a knife and teeth, thoroughly enjoying the sweetness and challenge to discover just how much more of the strands and juice I could wiggle free… it dawned on me I could never eat one of these in public. It just would not be the same. As I scraped to the core of the pit, reassured that floss that was at hand, I resolved myself that some pleasures are meant for the privacy of your own home.

networked

Recently there has been discussion about networking and the social and non-social nature of this form of community dynamic. Tribes to colonies, barbershops and local diners have been the physical assemblages of people idea-sharing, learning and progression in psycho-social behavior over time a solid connection between and within groups.

As we follow groups forming and engaging we see clubs and leagues. Dale Carnegie in 1913 brings about the importance of public speaking and shares insights into Networking as a targeted approach to connecting. From the school yard to the executive dining hall, networking cliques continue as a way to be personable in-person and relate to each other and to other groups.

The Age of Computers bring about the network of connecting of systems and data: Mainframes, Server Farms, Cloud Computing. A period of the dismantling of social constructs from another local tribe meeting place, the office, to the decentralization of people, as networking and data become more centralized.
Your letterman jacket or ‘bandana in blue’ has given way to the badges on your wall. The wall has given way to your handheld device and the two-way dialogue has given way to the one-way broadcast where comments are posted, but not discussed face-to-face. Kuflepuff47* posts a comment in a vacuum and if the spam filter misreads the header, the request for information will never be asked. Have we returned ourselves to the Degas painting The Absinthe Drinker ? And how are we finding ourselves back?

Over the last few years, I have heard marketing gurus encourage building your own tribe. A means to reconnect with people through the social-networking. But could this means of connection be today’s missing-link: How to be more social in a faster and better non-social way? You can tweet and you can text, but you can’t talk in line at the grocery store. You can e-vite your wedding invitations, and you can text back your RSVP, but if you call you may go right to voicemail and that box may never get checked.

How do we construct a town-square, when connection rarely has any sides at all? In a social sense I will continue to pursue connection. I will connect to you and connect you to information, in the format you need, whether I am linked into your profile, or not.
